Last weekend, on Sunday to be precise, I received some rather good news that our local shopkeeper, Kamau, had lost the debt book. That is the book that he uses to record us when we buy items on credit. Kamau, sounding so disturbed, had called me and urged me to report to his shop ASAP. I wondered what the problem was and decided to call Peter who broke the ‘sweet’ news to me.
Peter joyfully asked “haven’t you heard that Kamau lost the debt book?” I was so happy especially when imagining that I will not be paying my monthly debt at Kamau’s shop. At some point, I even regretted that I had not taken more items from the shop on credit that month. It was a very cold morning but the happiness that had befallen on me on hearing about the lost debt book was incredibly good. Without the book, it would be impossible for Kamau to tell who owes what from the shop. I hurriedly searched for my fellow debtors before making a trip to Kamau’s shop. Luckily, I managed to find 9 guys And As we were heading to Kamau’s shop, we kept guessing on the amount of money that could get lost if the debt book was not found. These are the real miracles that happen on poor debtors like us. As we were approaching Kamau’s shop, we were all smiles and hopeful. On arrival, I greeted Kamau but he did not reply. Instead, he just gave a rude nod. He looked very angry and worried. Kamau pulled one of us, Mwangi, aside and started talking. They stood there for a while and in the process, made some gestures that involved pointing towards my direction. Kamau then came to us to break the bad news “today I have some bad news” he continued “one of you stole the debt book” “We can make this simple if the thief returned the debt book by their own will. Otherwise, we will take him to the police” Kamau Threatened. There was a long silence before I interrupted by asking Kamau whether he has a suspect. Kamau replied by saying that the first suspect is the one who has the biggest debt…. It was then that I remembered that he was pointing at me earlier… my smile faded… suddenly!
